But our Positive Impact programme is about more than just measuring and reducing our carbon emissions. We believe it’s important that we have a social impact as well and have been collaborating on this with FairClimateFund since 2019.

Growing our scope, shrinking our carbon footprint

GoodShipping decarbonise supply chains by replacing fossil fuels with sustainable alternatives that use recycled cooking oil as a raw material. The biofuel reduces carbons emissions by 80-90% and is sulphur-free. We joined forces with GoodShipping in 2019 to help us achieve our ambition of a 100% carbon-neutral supply chain by 2030.

Greater insight in CO2 emissions

To get an even clearer picture of our CO2 emissions, Meelunie has chosen to work with BigMile. The company supplies software for calculating and analyzing transport-related CO2 emissions. “BigMile set the standard when it comes to calculating reporting, analysing and, last but not least, optimizing your CO2e” says Jeroen de Waaij, Meelunie’s sustainability manager.

On the way towards Net Zero

Positive Impact for Ukraine

The conflict in Ukraine has created a humanitarian crisis of historic proportions. Thus far, hundreds of civilians have lost their lives and 1 million have left their homes. Homes and vital infrastructure in several Ukrainian cities have been damaged or destroyed. According to the UN, 12 million Ukrainians need help and protection.

They support their development, through extra lessons and devices, such as smartphones and laptops for their education. Our colleague Bekim Mehovic is an ambassador at Life Skills and donated refurbished smartphones on behalf of Meelunie.

Press release: Building a new processing facility in Denmark

In keeping with its pioneering commitment to the protein transition, Meelunie is building a fava protein isolate manufacturing facility in Hedensted, Denmark. Helping meet the growing demand for plant-based proteins in ways that also address deforestation, inefficiencies in global agriculture and other climate-related challenges.

Zero emissions in shipments

This August, Jeroen de Waaij finalized his Master’s thesis: Green Pow(d)er at Meelunie. It includes recommendations as to how Meelunie can make its organic tapioca starch supply chain in Thailand more sustainable. Invaluable insights for Meelunie in its quest to further reduce CO2 emissions, as part of our goal to make shipments carbon-neutral by 2030.

Giant step for a smaller footprint

The partnership supports Meelunie’s mission ‘Plant Based Positive Impact’ and ambition to produce climate-neutral plant-based ingredients, making the company one of the first B2B companies to take this leap.

First Break Bulk shipment to USA

Meelunie is proud to announce that its first breakbulk shipment of Tapioca starch has been received in New York. With costs for shipping products in containers increasing enormously of late, our team has had to get creative and search for alternatives to secure supply for our US customers. Transporting such a large volume in one go proved a great success.

A lack of positive role models is the status quo for many children here. Bekim Mehovic is a volunteer and assists them to reach their goals of becoming the best versions of themselves.

In 2019, Meelunie started to process fava beans in cooperation with toll processors. The beans provide an excellent source of protein and starch. The hulls however leave us with a waste stream. Via our decarbonisation partner GoodShipping, we got in contact with Enerpy, an organisation involved in valorisation of food waste.

How fava beans could become the next big thing in plant protein.

“Fava is a plentiful protein source and a good fit for today’s products… When extruded, fava bean protein has a bit of extra firmness — good for enhancing textures of plant-based meat analogs”,  Gijs van Elst, director of health ingredients at global plant-based ingredient company Meelunie explains. Meelunie is also working on a soluble fava protein isolate that could be used to enhance protein in beverages without bulking them up.

Helping meet the growing demand for plant-based proteins in ways that also address deforestation, inefficiencies in global agriculture, and other climate-related challenges. The facility will open in October 2022, equipped with cutting-edge processing technology from SiccaDania, and employ a breakthrough process methodology developed by the University of Copenhagen (UCPH) following 17 years’ research.
